How to Operate an Environmentally Friendly Hospital

There are many ways that hospitals can change their operations to protect the environment. Some of these ideas can even save the hospital money as well as reduce health risks to employees and patients. These are all great reasons to make some adjustments in the operation of a health care facility.

Hospitals generate a huge amount of paper waste. Computer information technologies are in place in almost all U.S. hospitals at this time. Much information can be viewed online without being printed in a hard copy format. Policies can be put into place requesting that staff reduce printing hard copies when possible.

The Perfect Gift for the Gardener, Nature Lover and Every Child. Huh? What is it?

It's a Ladybug house!  The perfect green gift for so many.  The gardener loves having ladybugs in the garden to help control bugs that eat their plants and flowers.  The Ladybugs feed on aphids and other soft bodied insects that feed on their plants. This process is an organic gardener's "ace in the hole" method of natural, pest control.

The nature lover enjoys caring for these beneficial  insects and let's not forget about kids.  From ladybugs, children of any age can learn about the cycle of life and caring for some of our earth's tiniest inhabitants.  These little houses offer safe-havens and a place for the ladybugs to lay their eggs and go through metamorphosis.

As the days turn colder, ladybugs will be looking for a warm place to shield themselves from the wind.  Now is one of the best times of the year to put out a ladybug house.  Spray the inside of the ladybug house and the area around it with some sugar water to help attract these little beetles that are said to bring luck.

Happy Thanksgiving USA!

Things I am thankful for...
  1. My kids know I love them.
  2. I have managed to stay married for 16 years.
  3. I have fresh, hot water to use.
  4. I have a roof over my head.
  5. My children are learning to care for others.
  6. There is still joy in "the little things".
  7. Life is full of surprises big and small.
  8. I can afford to give my kids fresh fruit and vegetables.
  9. 41 is so much better than 18.
  10. I haven't lost my mind...yet!

    Autism, Cancer and Environmental Health

From one of my favorite Environmental Activists, Deirdre Imus, in the Huffington Post:

"When a group of New Jersey researchers investigated a possible correlation between NJ autism rates in conjunction to identified Superfund sites, their findings were consistent with other studies linking the disorder to environmental pollution.

It's Not Easy Being Green! Kermit says it the best...

You know some days are just better than others and other days just suck.  Some days I "Just say NO" to walking the destructive path and I eat green, I live green and I swear to God I pee green.  Usually I don't mind it when people look at me like a flippin' freak when I tell them I don't need a plastic bag for my take-out.  Other days it's like, "Just give me the damn food, you can put it in styrofoam for all I care."

    To hell with being green.

Red or White Wine? It doesn't matter...just make it green!

Do you realize that it is actually happening now?  The green revolution.  Right now.  Organizations, companies and people from every walk of life are starting to think about, and act upon, ways to make themselves and their planet healthier.  We are all a part of the positive change needed to sustain our world.

Through the economic struggles and uncertain times we are all facing, a green glimmer of  hopeful light is shining through to guide us out of unhealthy lifestyles, negative thinking and an unsustainable world.  Even those of us who are mired down in the everyday drudgery of simply "getting by", cannot miss the message that going green is something to pay attention to.

No matter where you are on your walk to green, an area that you might want to consider when greening your lifestyle is wine.  I came across an interesting article on wine which will help you go green with your red and white. You can read the article HERE.  Enjoy!

How Can I tell if my Plastics are Safe or Full of BPA...and What About Canned Food?

I have gotten the BPA (Bisphenol-A) question so many times from readers, that I thought I would try break it down and make it super simple for you to decipher plastics and the BPA question.

When buying new plastic items, look for BPA free on the label. In my opinion, you should try to avoid buying plastics as much as possible and stick with glass or stainless steel containers.  When looking at your old plastic items at home, you will find your answer as to what is safe to use posted right on the bottom of your plastics.

    Reports of Guillain-Barre Syndrome From H1N1 Flu-Shots

My dad in the back...always in his wheelchair.

When I came across the following article, I wanted to scream.  It really brings up so many awful memories from my Dad getting his Hep-B shot and then a few days later coming by my house telling me he couldn't feel his feet and was having trouble walking. That was almost 10 years ago and the start of an awful awareness that vaccines are not always safe.

My dad got Guillain-Barre Syndrome which usually goes away...in his case, he got the chronic version which

Begin to Treasure “Self”-Through OpenSky and $25 from Environmental Booty?

I don’t know about you, but these days shopping just feels like drudgery.  If it’s electronics you are looking for, Sunday’s newspaper ads can leave you wondering how the heck you are going to be able to tell you which one is the best. Okay so how about Amazon?  Great if you love rows and rows of the same exact product at slightly different prices, all accompanied by a seller you may or may not have any faith in…and we all know how important it is to have trust.  You want  to have some idea that you can trust the place you are shopping with and that they will be there for you if anything  goes even slightly wrong.

Maybe it’s time to put a little humanity back in shopping?  Maybe it’s time for

Your Health & the Earth’s: Grocery Shopping with an Eye on the Environmental Impact

The trouble with many weight loss programs  is that they seem to require us to alter our eating habits so completely that many people think it’s too expensive or too much trouble to even try it. However, it is possible to enjoy healthy food on any budget. And, the fact is that, the more you focus on purchasing local, unprocessed food, the healthier it is and the more money you will save. In addition, the more attention you pay to what you buy and where it comes from, the lower your impact on the environment will be…and that is something that should never be too much trouble for anyone.

Always purchase the healthiest food possible.  That seems simple enough but not everyone realizes

The Sony Eco-TV - Why We Love It!

The Sony KDL-VE5 Series has presence sensors that will actually shut the TV off when you leave a room.  I hear every mom in America cheering, don't you?  I know my girls are constantly leaving a room with the TV on and it makes me a little crazy.  Every time I hear or see a television on, and realize no one is watching, I see green...and it's not the sustainable kind.  I pay the electric bill and it always makes me realize just how much energy we are consuming.

Even though Sony is using the Eco-label to attract buyers, I think it truly fits in this case.  Hats off to Sony on an innovative  job well done.

You can see the read the full review of the Sony KDL-VE5 series HERE.

    Moochie Makes Me Happy!

A fellow blogger friend of mine from the Blog A Bit of Happy  has sent her readers on a mission.  She has asked us to find and send her pictures of "Happy".  I remembered this shot we took from Sarasota's Lido Beach during last years vaca and had to send it to her.  It made me so happy looking at it again, I wanted to share it with my community!

This dolphin comes right up to your boat and tries to "Mooch" food from you.  Of course it is illegal to feed him (or her?) but you can touch him and he seems so happy.  The girls loved it and so did Ron and I.

Have a great day and send your happy shots to submissions@abitofhappy.com and be sure to check out the blog.

Autism Spikes - David Kirby Still Points to Toxins

I came across something that you are probably not hearing about in the mainstream media.  Two federal studies that came out in October say that parents have a 1 in 100 (or greater) chance of having a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD.  In Boys, the odds are as high as 1 in 60 as boys are four times more likely to have ASD.

Steven Higgs had a great article about the reports.  I have posted highlights

Our US Government seems to be getting some things right lately.  Have you heard of the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative?  It is a USDA sponsored program with four basic goals:
    1. Support local farmers

    2. Strengthen rural communities
