Ban the Use of Plastic and Paper Bags? San Francisco Bans Bags Already...Just Say NO to Plastic AND Paper!

So seriously, I just read a commentary by Dick Spotswood where he accuses "eco-fundamentalists" of  going too far in trying to impose a bag ban in Marin, California.  He dances around some Global Warming crap and in doing so he totally misses the point.  Forget Global Warming.  A state like Florida uses 5 billion disposable paper and plastic bags each year.  The plastic bags are made from petroleum and break down into tiny pieces and harm our sea and wildlife.  The bags create a huge amount of waste.

Now I am not sure that we need to regulate or ban the use of paper pr plastic bags, but we certainly need to take action now in some way to get people to realize how toxic plastic bags are to our environment.  Be the "eco-fundamentalist" and just tell your friends to say no to both plastic and paper and urge them to get their own reusable, environmentally friendly bags for the grocery store, take out and other places that hand out those horrid plastic bags.

Then make sure you pick up some type of eco-friendly, reusable bags for yourself (buy as many as you would normally use in a grocery trip) and make sure you keep them clean.  A recent study found that 64% of the reusable bags tested were contaminated with some level of bacteria and close to 30% had elevated bacterial counts higher than what's considered safe for drinking water.

What You Should Know About Food Additives and Your Kids

Navigating Food Additives is a really quick video explanation of why artificial food additives are something you want to work on eliminating from your diet and your child's diet. I am a big fan of Dr. Alan Greene, author of "Feeding Baby Green" and  "Raising Baby Green" and he really lays it out succinctly in this clip when he discusses his nutrition tips on Good Morning America.

I often come across blogs or websites that seem to try and scare people into greening their health.  I just do not think it works.  Aren't we all just looking for current health information we can trust right now to keep ourselves and our loved ones healthy and vibrant.  Dr. Greene will give you current information on what food additives you should avoid and why without scare tactics. He is both down to earth and full of information you can use to make your life and the life of your family healthier and greener.

Looking for Safe and Non-Toxic Cleaning Supplies that Work? HG-Labs Brightly Green, All-Natural Plant-Based Cleaning Products Make Your Home Shine and are Safe for You and Your Family!

A few weeks ago someone said to me, "Oh you must have a ton of green cleaning supplies in your home."  It was then that I suddenly realized that I had only one product which would qualify as a green cleaner.  Worse yet, I wasn't even sure what was truly in the ingredients as I just picked it up on a whim.  I guess I fell victim to greenwashing at its worst: I had no idea about the company that manufactured the green product and I only bought it because of the green marketing.  I should have known better so I set out to find a good line of green cleaning supplies I could trust and rely on.

People frequently ask me to review their green cleaning supplies but most of the time they are a part of a

Stop Annoying Junk Mail and Help to Save our Environment!

Do you ever go to your mailbox and flip out over how much junk mail you find?  Well guess what?  According Forest Ethics, each household receives 800 pieces of junk mail every year.  According to CNN, a total of 105 Billion pieces of junk mail are delivered in the US every year. Aside from being annoying, only 44% of all of that junk mail ever makes it into the recycling bin.

If this bugs you as much as it bothers me, please join me in signing the Forest Ethics petition to stop junk mail and until we get the laws changed, toss your junk mail in the recycling bin.

Celebrate Green! Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations and Traditions for the Whole Family!

As I sit here listening to eight 13 year old girls squeal, giggle and chat with boys while they eat their healthy snacks at my daughter's birthday, I begin to look forward to entertaining for almost 30 people for a Green Christmas. Now my daughter convinced me to offer soda as a drink for her guests (against my better judgment I acquiesced) and when it comes to Christmas day, I am sure my husband will put his foot down and make me offer all kinds of unhealthy snacks and goodies.  Still, I will use everything I can find to turn our special celebration into as green a Christmas as possible as it is my passion to try to introduce my family and friends to a healthier, greener way of living.  Yet fulfilling my passion has to come with ease and comfort for
my guests and that is where the difficulty lies.

So guess what?  I just found an awesome book that can help me, and you, green any celebration with ease and comfort while feeling better about our sustainability and health.  You need to run over to my fellow OpenSky Shopkeepers' site called Celebrate Green.  This mother and daughter team (I know what a joy it is to work with your mother as I get the pleasure often to collaborate with my mother with my company) has put together this one of a kind book that takes the mystery out of green entertaining and gives us all some new ideas.

Check out their book and let me know some of your green entertaining ideas...I never tire of hearing how others are making their special events sustainable!

Want Green and Healthy Recipes? Check this Eco Recipe Site that Kicks Booty!

Hi there peeps!  I am in full swing getting ready for the Holiday...if full swing means I still have to buy and wrap presents and prepare a Green Christmas for 30 people.  It seems like there is never enough time in the day for kids, volunteering, husband, work, bills, shopping blah blah blah.  Anything I can find to green my family and make my life easier is mega valuable to me and I have a great find to share today.

There are certainly a ton of  recipe blogs and sites out there but I have never really found one that flipped my lid until today.  You must check out the Eco Recipes blog.  The first dish that grabbed my attention was the Avocado Citrus Salad recipe as I am an avocado freak.  The recipes take the angle of no GMO's, refined sugars or unhealthy fats and there are some really delicious sounding dishes to prepare.

Check it out and enjoy some delicious healthy eats!

Your Mother Was Right...Traditional, Natural and Money Saving Beauty Tips that Pass the Test of Time

Everyone hates being told “I told you so”, and most women also hate thinking their mother was right. However, on stepping upon the threshold of 30, and with my mother now in her early sixties, I can’t help but notice that on a good day, she looks not more than maybe only five or ten years older.

And with each wrinkle, thinned out skin or spot I notice, I hear her quite literally echoing voice telling me “I told you so”.  So what was it exactly that she used to always harp on about while growing up?

Great Organic, Gluten Free Food Line for Kids...My Kids Love It!

I just realized that I have never shared one of my greatest weapons in my fight against my kids ingesting partially hydrogenated fats, synthetic herbicides, synthetic pesticides, artificial additives and artificial preservatives.  Enviro Kidz is a  line of organic foods created for our little ones that I love and my kids think  are delicious.  Their products are gluten free and even packaged in environmental friendly Enviroboxes which lessens their impact upon our earth.

You can purchase these products at your local market (we get ours at Publix) but they are available at health food stores as well.

Perfect Green Baby Gift for Every New or Expecting Mom...The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (La Leche League International Book)

One of the most natural and sustainable ways to feed your baby is to go green, breastfeed and ditch the formula.

According to The Environmental Working Group:
  • The makers of Nestlé, Similac, Enfamil and PBM (who make store-brand formulas sold at WalMart, Target, Kroger and dozens of other retailers) all said that they use BPA in the linings of metal cans holding liquid formula.
  • BPA is widely used in powdered formula containers as well. Every manufacturer except Nestlé said it uses a BPA-based lining on the metal portions of their powdered formula cans. Nestlé failed to provide EWG with reliable documentation of their alternative packaging, and thus is not a clear improvement over other types.
  • Powdered formulas are a better choice. Our calculations indicate that babies fed reconstituted powdered formula likely receive 8 to 20 times less BPA than those fed liquid formula from a metal can.
  • BPA has been linked, in over 200 animal studies, to cancers and hormone disruption.

Breastfeeding is not for every mother and that is okay.  But think about it; obviously it is sustainable, it doesn't require you to use fuel to drive to purchase it and it is the healthiest choice for baby.  As to whether or not it is the choice for you or a new or expecting mom, that can be deciphered with The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding guide.

What Should You Know About Artificial Sweeteners and How to Find a Safe Sweetener?

It is no secret that I  had an awful experience with the artificial sweetener aspartame.  The experience was really what pushed me to develop Environmental Health-Wellness-Beauty and Environmental Booty.  I never imagined that the FDA and our government would allow such a harmful product such as aspartame to be available to consumers.

I am a smart cookie.  Yet if you ask anyone who knows me, they will tell you I always have a hard time understanding how people can just do things that are so wrong.  What the FDA and the manufacturer of aspartame, Ajinomoto, have done to us with this artificial sweetener is so wrong.  Consumers are starting to
realize that aspartame is not a safe sweetener.

You must Run Over to my Fellow OpenSky Shopkeeper, Trish Vawter's Scent Hive, and Pick Up Some Paraben Free Mascara from Dr. Hauschka!

Dr. Hauschka - Volume Mascara Black

I was checking out my fellow OpenSky Shopkeepers the other day and I found out that my girl Trish over at Scent Hive is a fan of all natural Dr. Hauschka.  I love their mascara because it doesn't contain parabens!  Parabens have been linked in some studies to breast cancer in women and low sperm counts in men. Obviously I do all I can to go paraben free but I  find it so hard to find a great mascara that is paraben free.

This all natural mascara is a winner and with free shipping at OpenSky it's a no-brainer-beauty-green deal.

I am heading to The Scent Hive on OpenSky to pick up some of the blue colored mascara for my daughter and some black for me. Hope to see you there!

Trish and I would love to hear about any great paraben free products that you have found and and can't go without.  Leave us a comment below and fill us in on your paraben free beauty secrets.

Check out PETA's "Banned" Thanksgiving Day TV Ad called "Grace"...would you have wanted to see this during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?

I think this is a cute ad, right?  The little girl kind of reminds me of how I act at family functions when I talk about environmental and health issues surrounding plastic water bottles, aspartame, food additives, recycling, parabens, organics...everyone loves it!

The ad is right on target when it talks of the toxins in our poultry in the USA.  NPR recently posted a report titled "Tests Find Chicken Often Contaminated, But Better Than Before" which says that
Two-thirds of store-bought chickens are contaminated with salmonella, campylobacter or both. The good news is, the rates are lower than they were lower than they were two years ago.  Organic birds fared
only slightly better.

I am on the precipice of going vegan and two of my daughters are ready to jump on board.  If I were to show them this ad, it would most certainly push them over to the vegan way of life.  How about you?  Does this ad bother you?  Are you happy ABC, Nickelodeon, and other networks would not let it air on Turkey Day here in the US?

It's Winter and the Mice are Moving In. Don't Go Through the Hassle of Exterminating them...Just Repel them Naturally with Mouse Magic!

Okay so maybe I have a special place in  my heart for rodents.  I know I am an oddball (see why HERE)  for my pet choices in the past, but I have a feeling I am not alone when it comes to wanting a natural, safe and humane way to rid our comfy homes of rodents.  Even my husband, "Big Bad Dad" as we refer to him, got a little choked up when he used to have to toss a cute little mouse from the nasty, sticky pad in our attic.  Don't even get me started on how much of a bummer it was to scrape a little "Mickey Mouse" off of the mouse trap!  Plus, if you forget to check all the traps, the wonderful smell of home can turn into the smell of...well, you fill in the blank.

So what to do now that the colder weather is here and our little rodent friends are moving in and setting up a nice little place to have their babies in our pantry?  Getting rid of rodents is a must for the sake of cleanliness,  clothes, keepsakes, kids (no little hands in the mouse traps please), food and our sanity. Have you seen Mousehunt?
