The Latest on the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Disaster

The first bird covered in oil from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was spotted Friday.  People working Deleware based Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research, are using Dawn blue dish washing soap to clean the oil off the young northern gannet.  The bird was found off of the Louisiana shoreline and not on the coast but more wildlife is expected to be in need of cleaning as the days progress.

Walk the Path to Green Living in Naya Shoes and Make Every Day Earth Day

I want to introduce you guys to a hot new line of women’s shoes called Naya. It’s a fashionable, comfortable and surprisingly, eco-friendly shoe line. Naya is a great step women can take to walk on the path to green living to look good, feel good and do good for the environment. You know I think we are all kind of over the whole  Earth Day celebrations once a year and really moving to more of an "Every Day is Earth Day" message.  It is time to start putting our money where our mouths are to really make an impact on our sustainability.

The Naya line is for women who want to make earth-friendly choices, but don’t want to look “crunchy granola”.   These are some adorable Eco-shoes.  Each shoe starts with a beautiful, feminine design and is made from eco-friendly materials such as chrome-free and vegetable tanned leathers, recycled cork and rubber soles, biodegradable latex foam cushioning and sustainable bamboo heels.

Naya is available at Shoes.com, Zappos.com, Piperlime.com and PlanetShoes.com; at select Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com, select Dillard’s stores and Dillards.com; and in more than 60 independent and specialty stores.

SAVE THE EARTH THROUGH SOME SIMPLE ACTIONABLE STEPS - from Lift You UP Blog - Always there for You:

I have been blogging for a while now and I have met some amazing people.  My blogging friends have served to inspire and motivate me to never give up on my mission to help educate consumers about how the choices they make can impact their health and the health of our planet.  Imagine my surprise when a friend of mine,
who inspires others each day, wrote an amazing piece titled "SAVE THE EARTH THROUGH SOME SIMPLE ACTIONABLE STEPS" and gave credit for his inspiration to me?  The really exciting thing about James' article is that it reached an entire segment of people who may not otherwise have heard the Eco-echo of my green living message.

Think Aspartame is Safe? Let's Ask The Center for Science in the Public Interest

Food for Thought
Aspartame is no friend of mine and apparently The Center for Science in the Public Interest feels it is an additive to be avoided too.  According to their website, "Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet), a chemical combination of two amino acids and methanol, was initially thought to be the perfect artificial sweetener, but it might cause cancer or neurological problems such as dizziness or hallucinations."

Hmmm...and this stuff is in over 6,000 foods and drinks marketed in the US.

Do We Have Too Much Stuff? The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard

I came across an interview on ABC News that George Stephanopoulos did with Annie Leonard about her book "The Story of Stuff" and it really got me thinking about all of our consumption.  As I look around our home, I see so much "stuff" and I wonder where it all came from.  When I was a child I don't remember having so much and I think I have done an injustice to my children in giving them so much.  Not only have they grown to feel entitled, but I wonder if I am teaching them that things can fill a void in their little hearts that living more simply cannot.

Recently, our income dropped drastically due to my husband's job loss and my girls have heard the word "no" more than ever before.  The first thing my girls said when Daddy got a new job was, "Now can we get...texting, a pillow pet and new clothes?"

I have been thinking about living more simply, not only for financial reasons but for our planet and souls as well.  I mean how many Barbies can a little girl have that actually adds to their creative play time?

I urge you to watch the video above even though it is a long one.  Turn it on and browse the web while you listen.  I agree with a lot of what is said, although I take a different view of our government as being one that is there to "take care of us" as Ms. Leonard believes.  The video makes some good points but beware of the   propaganda.  For example, Ms. Leonard states that the US has only 4% of our original forests.  The US has actually been gaining forest area since 1997.  I get the sense that Ms.Leonard dislikes Capitalism when I think the real culprit lies with personal responsibility.

Start thinking about your own consumption and how we can work together to make some necessary changes for our greater good.  I think it is important, though, that these changes be made on an individual basis without total government mandate. Thoughts?

Have you Heard about the ecoATM? Recycle Cell Phones, Save the Environment and make Some Cash!

How many old cell phones do you have around your house?  I think we must have at least five.  My little ones like to play with them and frankly I do not know how to dispose of them safely.  I certainly am not going to toss them in the trash as they do not degrade and contain chemicals and materials that can be harmful to the environment.  The chemicals can leach out into the soil and contaminate groundwater.

Now there may be a simple solution coming to a store near you.  Automated e-cycling stations from ecoATM are popping up all over the country and they make it super easy to get rid of your old cell, protect the environment and make a little cash too. In some instances you can earn big bucks.  Watch the video above for more information and keep an eye out for an ecoATM coming to your area.

Why are Razor Blades so Expensive? Go Eco at CVS and Save BIG!

Why are razor blades so expensive?  I don't know but I certainly can tell you how to save a ton of cash and go green at the same time.  I really love CVS Pharmacy.  It seems that I end up in there a couple of times a week and one of the reasons is that  they have some amazing prices on Eco consumables.  A few weeks ago I got some "green" paper towels (yes I use paper towels...I know shame on me) for a steal.  Each roll was like $.70 or something.
