How to Fight Breast Cancer? Get Your Mammogram, Never Stop Giving and Take Pink...It's SoTru!

How to Fight Breast Cancer?  Get Your Mammogram, Never Stop Giving and Take Pink...It's SoTru!
Last week I had to go through the indignity of getting my yearly mammogram.  I say indignity because I was never busty, but after nursing three girls for a total of six years, my breasts are a member of the itty bitty...well you know the rest of that saying right?  I am always surprised that the poor tech can actually fit my "little" girls into the machine and get a picture of my breasts.   It is truly one of the best ways to save the girls and keep an eye out for breast cancer right?

How 3 Kids are Creating the Next Great Green Inventions...PBS KIDS GO!’s Design Squad Announces Winners of the 2010 Trash to Treasure Competition

Considering the number of you who were interested in the post I did about the Eco-competition for kids, I wanted to give an update.  PBS KIDS GO!’s Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series Design Squad has announced the 3 winners of the 2010 Trash to Treasure competition.  You might remember that the Eco-competition challenged kids who were aged 5-19 to spend their summer vacation recycling, reusing, and re-engineering everyday materials to create the next great green invention.

After the folks at PBS sorted through hundreds of entries, three young innovators won a trip to Boston to see their designs built by the award-winning design consultancy Continuum.  Lilly, 12, and MaryAnn, 14, sisters from Ava, New York, and Daniel, 14, from Franklin Lakes, New Jersey designed ways to recycle, reuse and re-engineer everyday materials into new inventions: “The Smarter Toilet” (a water saving device); "Sibling Soaker" (a homemade dunk tank); and “MiBike” (a bike that holds a backpack and protects a kid from rain and snow).

All three winners flew to Boston Columbus Day weekend and worked side-by-side with Continuum designers, strategists and engineers, led by Experiential Modeling Manager Richard Ciccarelli. Over the weekend, the process of transforming a DIY design to world-class prototype was filmed for a 30-minute episode of a new Design Squad series which will early in 2011.  How cool is that?  Well it got even better for MaryAnn and her "Smarter Toilet".

MaryAnn and her “Smarter Toilet” design were honored at the White House  as part of President Obama’s Science Fair. MaryAnn actualy got to shake President Obama's hand, showed him her design, and even got him to sign her note excusing her from school!  Now I feel really guilty for not sending in my 10 year old's idea for creating a recyled and recylable silly band jewelry set.  Sorry Lou Lou.  There is always next year right?

Wanna Save the World? Think About it. It's Important

Wanna save the world?  Who doesn't right?  We want to live on a planet where the water is pure and clean, the children are healthy and strong and the air, soil and forests are alive and thriving. The future health of our planet and ourselves is not something to be left to those who are "more knowledgeable" or those who "get paid" to worry about stuff like that.  Truly, our future depends on our collective knowledge and actions and I ask you to personally define the part you will play in creating a healthy forever.  What choices will make today,  big or small, that will change your  health and the health of our world tomorrow?  Think about it.  It's important.

I certainly think about it every single day and it can sometimes feel futile.  You know what I am saying?  I mean I will never give up but some days are better than others.  Well today was better than others. I just read an inspirational article titled, "State of the Organic Union"  by the granddaughter of the original organic iconoclast and a third-generation organic insider named Maria Rodale.  She writes passionately of the three major issues that could affect every single person on this planet for better or for worse.

With a quick 5 minute read of Maria's article and with just a click of your mouse right HERE, who knows, perhaps you will choose to help save the world today.

Earth to McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Johnson & Johnson...Hello...Do You Think You May Have a Problem? Latest News and Current Lot Numbers for the 13th Tylenol Recall Because of Possible Fungicide 2,4,6-tribromophenol Contamination

It seems that there is a pretty big problem when Johnson and Johnson Tylenol manufacturers decide to stack empty pill bottles on wooden pallets treated with the fungicide 2,4,6-tribromophenol.  Somehow, the fungicide actually makes its way into the pill bottles and contaminates the Tylenol.  Now McNeil knows this is a problem as it has happened 13 times!  I told you about one of the recalls earlier this year so aren't we all like, "Hello, earth to McNeil and Johnson & Johnson...do you think you may have a problem?"

Still Recovering from the BlogWorld Expo in Not so Green Las Vegas

My girlies dropped me off at OIA on Thursday afternoon for a weekend of non-stop...
Lordy I cannot believe how tired I am after my weekend at the BlogWorld Expo in Las Vegas.  You might remember,  I wondered if I would crash, but (obviously) I was perfectly safe and even feel I have conquered my fear of flying.  Yea!  Southwest Airlines was totally great and their green efforts were evident.  I loved it when I landed in Vegas and the pilot made sure to tell all of the passengers to give their trash to the attendants as Southwest recycles.

It was such a great trip and I met so many wonderful people. From getting hints and tips from the folks at Google/Blogger to meeting with the Senior VP of Communications at TLC, the time I spent in Vegas was invaluable.  More on the TLC project later.

WGBH and PBS KIDS Team Up with Story of Stuff’s Annie Leonard on a New Animated Broadband Series for Kids Ages 6-9

WEBISODES AIM TO GET ELEMENTARY-AGE KIDS TO THINK MORE DEEPLY ABOUT THE STUFF IN THEIR LIVES

WGBH and PBS KIDS have teamed up with Annie Leonard on LOOP SCOOPS—a new Web series that brings Story of Stuff’s “think responsibly about the stuff in your life” message to kids, families, and educators. Eight short animated videos show kids how to think more deeply and creatively about the world they live in, and how to make choices based on what they discover. So as kids look upon objects and activities in their daily life, they will begin asking: Where does it come from? What it’s made of? What happens to it when it’s thrown away?

Heading to Vegas for the BlogWorld Expo and Bringing my Green Travel Essentials..Hope I don't Crash

I am bringing all of my green travel essentials and I hope they do not weigh more than 50 pounds or I'll be paying extra!!
I have such a huge fear of flying that I have not flown since 1997.  Wild huh?   Well now I am heading to Vegas for a few days to attend the BlogWorld Expo and I hope I don't crash.  This is like the biggest social media event of the year here in the entire world and I really would hate to miss it.  Seriously.  I am very excited even though all three of my girls have already been crying and I don't leave until 2:30 today!  I am flying on my favorite green airline, Southwest and packing all of my favorite green essentials. These days there are so many rules and restrictions about carry ons, that I have been a bit stressed.  But I have it all taken care of now with some of my favorite green travel essentials.

Here's an Easy Way to Make Money through Green Living! CVS will Pay YOU to Use a Reusable Bag with their Green Bag Tag Program and it is Sooo Easy!

I love CVS and their green initiatives. I actually have found their private label green living products work great and save me money. Now CVS is really giving up the green with their Green Bag Tag program. I have a CVS  close to my home and find myself in there a few times a week and I just love it. It's funny because I actually get to know the folks who work there and they have always kind of laughed at me. It's not that I am funny because I try to read all of the trashy magazines that I refuse to buy before I am checked out. They laugh at me because I always forget my reusable bags and have to carry my purchases.

Love the Sexy Reusable Shopping Bag You Gave Me, but Where is the Green in White House Black Market?

So if you have been following along for any ampount of time here on Environmental Booty, you know what a freak I am about reusable bags.  I hate plastic bags and what they are doing to our environment and the oil that is necessary for their production.  I reuse my plastic bags until they fall apart and then I try to bring them into Publix to be recycled; a great green effort on their part.

My Green Day so Far...a Surprising Chat with a Local Firefighter about the Danger of Petroleum Products in our Homes and Why I've Fallen Back in Love with Kraft Food's Crystal Light Pure Fitness

Me playing fireman or firewoman or whatever...that hose is powerful!

My green day so far has been just perfect.  I spent the morning with my daughter and her preschool class getting a tour of our local fire station from some pretty hunky firefighters.  Not only were they hunky, they were green and I am not even sure they knew it.

How to Celebrate in Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Beyond: Save the Girls, Send a Message of Hope and Give the Full Monty!

Celebrate in Pink and Spread the Message with a "Save the Girls" T in Large - $20

It's Breast Cancer Awareness month and I obviously wanted to make a pretty big deal of it.  This month, the mission to spread the word about Breast Cancer, is something I proudly share with many of you.  During not only this month, but beyond, I am committed to fighting this disease with information and action. In fact, one of the first things I did on my journey to green, was to get rid of all of the shampoo in my home I used on myself and my girls which contained cancer causing parabens. Each week I post the latest information and studies about the confirmed and possible causes of breast cancer. We all have a best friend, a sister, mother, teacher or loved one who has been touched by breast cancer.  Many of us have experienced the fear of the unknown when that one mammogram result come back with not the greatest of news.

But after much thought, instead of commemorating this special month by talking about ways to reduce your risks for breast cancer, I decided to share a message from one of my most passionate and amazing Environmental Booty OpenSky Shop suppliers, Deb Pfiffner, Partner & Supporter of Celebrate In Pink.

Orlando Goes Green with its New Amway Center - First NBA Facility to Earn LEED Certification

So there was a ton of hoopla around my town last weekend surrounding the opening of the new $380 million home to the Orlando Magic, the Amway Center in Orlando.  I wasn't able to make it, but thought I would check out their site and see what's in store for me at the new arena the next time I watch my Magic kick basketball booty.  Imagine my surprise when I saw that the Amway Center is the first NBA facility to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) new construction certification from the U.S. Green Building Council!  This is a tremendous accomplishment and, unless I am missing something, I am exceedingly amazed that the Orlando Magic Marketing team has remained silent on sharing this news.

RAW is Green! Tips on How to Eat RAW for a Greener, Healthier Lifestyle

Guest Post

My name is Megha and I am a yoga enthusiast, wellness freak and energy healing practitioner rolled into one. I write about simple everyday things that can make our urban lives more connected and healthier on my blog called BackToBasics.com.sg.  Shane was generous enough to offer me a chance to do a guest post on her blog and I am happy to share with you some tips on how to eat RAW for a greener, healthier lifestyle. So let's find out how RAW is green...

Did you know that RAW foods are full of fiber, make you full without making you feel heavy or sleepy and are full of nutrients?  Eating raw means going green: you’re saving on the stress involved in cooking every single time, saving on gas consumption to light your stove and also on electricity involved in baking, heating and reheating your food. Additionally, raw food is mostly vegetarian and vegetarian is green in so many ways, but that’s a whole other debate we’re not getting into for now!

Personally, I've looked at salads mostly as a great option because I feel like they do wonders to my skin and they're really easy to prepare when I am lazy and unwilling to cook! Plus, for me, packing a piece of fruit in my handbag is the quickest way to satisfy that sudden feeling of hunger when I am on the go!

Organic Aloe Cadabra - Why Your Sex Life Should be Green

Although this obviously isn't the easiest thing to blog about, I think a green sex life is so important that I am willing to risk a little embarrassment to tell you about something every married couple should have in their bedside table.  Do you know what is in that personal lubricant you buy at the drugstore?  You might be surprised to know that, unless you are using a non-toxic product like Aloe Cadabra, you are putting a petroleum based synthetic full of harmful parabens and chemicals onto and into your bodies.  Think about that for a minute and you will come to the same conclusion I did, "YUCK!  There has to be something better."

For our own good, we are all becoming more aware of what we put onto and into our bodies.  From the foods and medications we ingest to the personal care products we put on our bodies, we are making healthier choices for ourselves and our planet.

Aloe Cadabra is the smooth and silky, food grade, organic surprise that is fun, safer, and less harmful than chemical brands. Choosing a green sex life is just another way to live a healthier life. Take my advice and pick some up (Buy Now), you will be happy you did!

3 Easy Ways to Live Green with a Chemical Free Kitchen

So you are on board with trying to live a greener lifestyle for yourself and our planet.  Good for you!  To get you started on your journey, here are 3 easy ways to live green with a chemical free kitchen.

and save 35%!!

  1. Are you familiar with PFOA's?  Have you heard about Teflon and non-stick pans with PFOA's?  Do you know that there are studies which have shown the chemical to be present at low levels in the bloodstream of 9 out of 10 Americans, and in the blood of most newborns. PFOA has been shown to cause cancer, low birth weight and a suppressed immune system in laboratory animals exposed to high doses.  Although the effects of PFOA at lower doses in humans are disputed, there does seem to be a link between PFOA and raised levels of cholesterol  and PFOA's are in the non-stick coating of your Teflon pans.  But wait, it gets worse, PFOA's are detrimental to our environmental health as well as human health.  Even the EPA has declared PFOA's to be likely carcinogens.  Ditch the chemical laden cookware (I have a metal scrap plant near me to recycle pans) and go chemical free with Earth Pans Hard Anodized Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set or a Lodge Logic 12-Inch Pre-Seasoned Skillet.
